visual art scope & sequence
Broad contexts/topics that will be used for the development of the knowledge and skills in all Art units at both levels, and examples of possible content
Individual unit descriptions detail specific content for specific units each semester, at both levels.
Years 5-7- Creating and Making, Exploring and Responding
  • Experiment with visual arts conventions and techniques( including those of Aboriginal and TS Islander artists where appropriate), to reveal a theme or concept in their artwork
Drawing: Elements and Principles /Conventions: perspective, illusions, tone, symmetry, proportion, balance,  
  • Analyse how artists use visual conventions in artworks (conventions:  established procedures, in making art works, that use particular pictorial devices, techniques or processes to represent, organise, or interpret ideas).
  • Painting: perspective, symmetry, proportion,  balance
  • Develop planning skills for art-making by exploring techniques and processes used by different artists
Drawing/Painting/Collage:  perspective, symmetry, proportion, balance
Practise techniques and processes to enhance representation of ideas in art-making
  • Printmaking/ Photography iPad - Dramatic scenes – creative iPad photography - plan and work collaboratively
  • Develop ways to enhance student intentions as artists through exploration of how artists use materials, techniques and processes
Discussion of select examples by artists across the centuries (theory/artist exploration)
Multi/mixed media
  • Present artwork demonstrating consideration of how the artwork is displayed to enhance the artists intention to an audience

Identify and connect specific features and purposes of visual artworks from contemporary and past times to explore viewpoints and enrich their art-making starting with Australian artworks including those of Aboriginal and TSI people

Years 8-10- Creating and Making, Exploring and Responding
  • Conceptualise and develop representations of themes, concepts or subject matter to experiment with their developing personal style, reflecting on the styles of artists including Aboriginal and TSI artists
Traditional representations and themes; Western Art traditions vs other traditions;
Sketches: set of ideas on selected themes, comparisons, analysis, conclusions
  • Manipulate materials, techniques, technologies and processes to develop and represent their own artistic intentions
Investigate the work of several contemporary artists to identify how they convey their intentions. Compare and contrast styles. Portray an emotion, expressed in pastel, paint and as a 3d sculpture. Which expresses the idea best, why?
  •  Develop and refine techniques and processes to represent ideas and subject matter
Photography: iPad dramatic scenes, analyse, improve
  •  Plan and design artworks that represent artistic intention
Investigation of contemporary themes in art, artists who use recycled materials
  •  Present ideas for displaying artworks and evaluate displays of artworks
Diorama scale model public display of a themed exhibition
  •  Evaluate how representations communicate artistic intentions in artworks  they make and view to inform their future art-making from contemporary and past times to explore differing viewpoints and enrich their visual art-making, starting with Australian artworks, including those of Aboriginal and TSI artists and consider international artworks
  • Investigative assignment, discussion, personal response. Compare Pollock and Abstract Expressionism with Emily Kngwarreye’s paintings. Visually similar, yet contextually diverse.
